a miracle

Last night, I heard a rather profound line in the last moments of a movie I was watching. A character to which the audience had not seen for the first two hours and 34 minutes said one of the most meaninful quotes...

"Safety is the greatest risk of all, because safety leaves no room for miracles and miracles are the only sure thing in life. "

I'm still wrapping my brain about what it means, but here's what I have so far...

  • Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature (St. Augustine)
  • Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense everything that comes from love is a miracle (Marianne Williamson).
  • Safety is something that happens between your ears, not something you hold in your hands (Jeff Cooper).

So is it is a good thing to be safe?  Because the more safe you are, the less likely a miracle will find its way to your situation.  Right? But does one need a miracle if they are really safe?

You see my dilemma?  Boom boom goes the fireworks in my head.

HilBama-nation

What happened at an NYC art exhibit the other day was an absolute HILBAMANATION, or abomination. Yes, perhaps a cheesy play on words, but the fact still remains. According to the NY Times blog: Cityroom, "Boston-born performance artist, Yazmany Arboleda, tried to set up a provocative art exhibition in a vacant storefront on West 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan with the title, “The Assassination of Hillary Clinton/The Assassination of Barack Obama”. By 9:30 a.m., New York City police detectives and Secret Service agents had shut down the exhibition, and building workers had quickly covered over the inflammatory title with large sheets of brown paper and blue masking tape. The gallery is across the street from the southern entrance to The New York Times building." Apparently, Mr. Crazy man shouted from the mountain-tops that "It’s art. It’s not supposed to be harmful. It’s about character assassination — about how Obama and Hillary have been portrayed by the media.” He added, “It’s about the media.” This guy even has websites: http://www.theassassinationofbarackobama.com http://www.theassassinationofhillaryclinton.com Unfortunately, it's a little harder to shut down websites, than it is to shut down an art exhibit. Which, incidentally, happened. After several hours of questioning, Mr. Crazy man was released. Whether this man was trying to send a message about assassination or the media, I don't know. But all this nonsense got me thinking. I understand that there are some serious safety concerns with presidential candidates, moreover, the actual president. And for Obama to be the first African-American candidate this nation has seen... I just wonder if the nation's ready. I always talk about how proud I am to live in a country where we have a minority in a promising position to run the country... how we, as a humanity, have come along way in acceptance of the extraordinary, and how excited I am that I actually get to witness this first hand in my lifetime. There is a possibility that I just never noticed... but my eyes are open and burning now, and I am really concerned about whether our nation is ready to be run by the minority. And don't let Hillary be VP!! You want to see anxiety peak? Heaven knows, I am more than ready. But with all the propaganda, threats, conspiracy theories, and the like -- i'm just nervous. And then there's his family. Obama isn't the only one who suffers from the threats, and the madness. When is enough enough? Is it all worth the risk? I just wonder.
